lowyat is a forum, but it has a thriving and immensely popular classifieds section. The technology is different: one is using a forum app, the other a dedicated classifieds app, but the intention is the same. It does not have a real estate section yet, but it has branched from only computers to other sections from handphones to cameras.

Successful sites are those that concentrate on one area first, like lowyat, realestate.net.my and zerotohundred.com . For most people, if they want to sell/buy computers, houses and cars, they head for those sites first.

You have to find your niche. A jack-of-all-trades will find it hard to gain critical mass, unless you are to launch an aggressive campaign as mentioned.

DD: There is limitation on the script which is pretty hard to change. I actually thought of spliting it into category like realestate, computers, cars and jobs…but that wouldn’t be call a classifieds. Lowyat is focusing on forum, which is not my concern, don’t think you can sell your house there as the reader there are not house buyer

1) critical mass
Right now everything is fragmented. Lowyat.net’s classifieds gets much more hits than syiok.com. So if I want to sell something of course I would post there first. You’ll need to promote syiok.com aggressively in a short period of time. Nuffnang ad ? If users go there and they don’t see enough users, they leave.

2) Focus and Competition
Perhaps focus on one area first, then add the rest. Lowyat is very successful because it focuses on computer ads first, then now everyone posts everything else for sale.. even cookies and pets! Likewise realestate.net.my - they concentrate on real estate first right now, and they do it well. You can upload pictures, and there are different fields for price, rooms, leasehold/freehold, etc.
