I have been trying hard to promote Syiok.com. It is definately one of the very first online classifieds in Malaysia. I don’t even remember when Syiok.Com started officially, but from the domain it was registered Oct 18, 2004. The official website should be launched a month later. It was hard at first because no one would give it the first few post.
First 100 users at Syiok.Com was at Apr 29th, 2005 - It was a good moment, after more than 7 months of hard work and coding it for SEO friendly.
Second 100 users to Syiok.Com was much faster June 21st, 2005 - I learn that this is going to be a exponential growth. More readers = More Buyer = More Posting = More Google Listing = More Traffic > This cycle goes back to somemore readers.
A year later June 9th marked Syiok.Com 1000th users.
Shortly after, actually quite long also, but it was plan much earlier than March 10th 2007. IÂ have my identity, SyiokDotCom. I printed 100 polo t-shirt with all my earning through out the years to promote my websites. It wasn’t succesful and I stop giving them out because I have to mail them and it is very costly and slow. Not sure where my shirt will end up.
Today we have 2947 users and more than close to 5k pageviews a day.
For the growth of Syiok.Com, I hope that all malaysian out there could continue to support me by posting in the classifieds, giving it a try as it benefits you when this community grow.

I think the following is important
1) critical mass
? If users go there and they don’t see enough users, they leave.
Right now everything is fragmented. Lowyat.net’s classifieds gets much more hits than syiok.com. So if I want to sell something of course I would post there first. You’ll need to promote syiok.com aggressively in a short period of time. Nuffnang ad
2) Focus and Competition
Perhaps focus on one area first, then add the rest. Lowyat is very successful because it focuses on computer ads first, then now everyone posts everything else for sale.. even cookies and pets! Likewise realestate.net.my - they concentrate on real estate first right now, and they do it well. You can upload pictures, and there are different fields for price, rooms, leasehold/freehold, etc.

DD: There is limitation on the script which is pretty hard to change. I actually thought of spliting it into category like realestate, computers, cars and jobs…but that wouldn’t be call a classifieds. Lowyat is focusing on forum, which is not my concern, don’t think you can sell your house there as the reader there are not house buyer
You missed the point completely though.
lowyat is a forum, but it has a thriving and immensely popular classifieds section. The technology is different: one is using a forum app, the other a dedicated classifieds app, but the intention is the same. It does not have a real estate section yet, but it has branched from only computers to other sections from handphones to cameras.
Successful sites are those that concentrate on one area first, like lowyat, realestate.net.my and zerotohundred.com . For most people, if they want to sell/buy computers, houses and cars, they head for those sites first.
You have to find your niche. A jack-of-all-trades will find it hard to gain critical mass, unless you are to launch an aggressive campaign as mentioned.

DD: Your advise is greatly appreciated. I will need to make a decision on which I should lean towards as I have Malaysia Property, Malaysia Used Car and Malaysia Classifieds on first page of Google. While Malaysia Jobs and Malaysia Car is on second page.
Which will be a little wasted if I decided to change to one topic. I think I might just register another website to target this users.
