Just moved my hosting

I learn that moving hosting is pretty painless. I tought it would be much harder. But it takes a while for the nameserver to change.

Another thing is to make sure that your database is exported out and then upload to the new ones. If the name and password is changed, you will need to look for a config file which will include the password and username of the mySQL database. Change it to the new ones.

If your new host have a different username. You need to change the script path too. Each script (I think most, including Wordpress) will have one of its path in mySQL, only phpbb forum doesn’t have one.

Just login to phpmyadmin, then search for your old username, you should get like

/home/oldusername/domain/something.com/blog/

If you change you username, it should be different now.

This should be the same for DirectAdmin hosting company but I don’t know about cpanel.

Use Gmail as a SPAM filter

So then I was thinking, why not just forward my normal email to my gmail account, access it via POP3 like normal and then just have that account on my client setup with my real email address.

What you need to do is to forward all your normal to Gmail and then uses their POP to “pop.gmail.com”. From my experience, google have the best SPAM filter, nothing blocks SPAM better than Gmail…I don’t know much about anti-SPAM software in the market.

Web Hosting with gethosted.com.my

I think I will host my website with Gethosted.com.my. I was looking around for a hosting company as my hosting term will end on October. But to make sure that I could transfer everything without any problem, I would like to get them earlier. They currently have discount for share hosting:-

Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka! We are celebrating our Merdeka anniversary and all of our SHARED WEB HOSTING are 50% off for the first year. Use this coupon code when order. Coupon code: “merdeka” without the quote.

Seems like a pretty good deal for me and it is using direct admin, which is what I am currently using. Transfering should be easy, but still need to spend some time to make sure everything will be running fine.

If anyone of you have any comment, good or bad, kindly voice out now.

Finding a Domain for your Website or Blog

As there are less and less domain (.com) everyone is trying to get a .com. Why, it is because if your did a website that is successful with a .net, don’t you think some of the user will end up remembering .com instead and the owner of .com will get the benefit. Although .org is slightly different because is not a norm to register .org for personal domain.

Here is some website that could help your locate the closest or your exact domain.

http://www.whois.sc
There is this “Name Spinner” features that jumbles up all the letter you typed into the search box and come out with a list of domain, it shows .com .net .org .us .biz. All domain will be shown indicating if it is registered, parked, dropping, or open for registration. Although there is limited function for new user but it is still useful.

Typing http://www.whois.sc/yourdomain.com [without the www] will actually shows information about the domain. I shows things like expiry day, expiration date, person that is own the domain with information, nameserver and hosting ip. All this are quite useful, as I use them quite often.

Another website for domain is http://www.justdropped.com
I usually use this website to find domain that are dropped recently. Because it is a used domain, you may still have some alexa rankings, some visitors and also some search engine links already. As there are thousands and thousands of links dropping everyday, finding a good ones is not that easy, but with this website, it is much easier than before. But you may want to check out the Website History to make sure that it is not some nasty website in the past.

http://whois.webhosting.info/
Is another whois website, but the difference is that you can whois the ip and shows what domain is hosted within the hosting company. This is useful to check out a hosting company before you join it.

for .my server http://whois.mynic.net.my – To check informaiton on Malaysian Domain.

Happy Shopping for domain!

Gmail Web Storage

I have read this article from engadget and it seems useful and I should share this with those who does not know this.

You remember your storage at Gmail, use it to store your picture, movies, files etc. Now it is easier. No more email attachment to yourself (that is what I do). The only limit is the 10mb attachment. I have just downloaded it and it is great.

Here is what you need.

Gmail account
Gmail Drive shell extension
Windows XP PC
To access your files elsewhere, a browser that supports Gmail. Here????s the official list:

Fully supported browsers:
Microsoft IE 5.5+ (Windows)
Netscape 7.1+ (Windows, Mac, Linux)
Mozilla 1.4+ (Windows, Mac, Linux)
Mozilla Firefox 0.8+ (Windows, Mac, Linux)
Safari 1.2.1+ (Mac)
Will work with Gmail????s basic HTML view:
Microsoft IE 4.0+
Netscape 4.07+
Opera 6.03+

It works like charm. Now it would be easy to store stuff and retreive it by using the internet. Just like a portable storage.
