Typing http://www.whois.sc/yourdomain.com [without the www] will actually shows information about the domain. I shows things like expiry day, expiration date, person that is own the domain with information, nameserver and hosting ip. All this are quite useful, as I use them quite often.

I usually use this website to find domain that are dropped recently. Because it is a used domain, you may still have some alexa rankings, some visitors and also some search engine links already.
